Meta barcoding bestaat uit twee onderdelen: Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) en bio-informatica. NGS is een techniek waarmee in \u00e9\u00e9n run van miljoenen stukjes DNA de genetische code kan worden gelezen. Bio-informatica is de techniek waarmee van deze miljoenen stukjes genetische code soortenlijsten kunnen worden gemaakt. Oftewel welke genetische codes uit deze enorme berg data horen bij welke organismen. Op deze manier wordt er een kwantitatieve soortenlijst verkregen van de organismen waarvan DNA is aangetroffen in een monster. Meta barcoding is een uitermate geschikte technologie om soortensamenstelling en frequentie van voorkomen in kaart te brengen van microbi\u00eble gemeenschappen (communities). Deze communities bestaan vaak uit duizenden verschillende soorten die meestal alleen op basis van genetische verschillen goed te onderscheiden zijn. Hierbij valt te denken aan het in kaart brengen van de menselijke darmflora waarbij een verstoring grote gezondheidsklachten tot gevolg kan hebben. Maar ook industri\u00eble processen zoals rioolwaterzuiveringen zijn microbieel complex en verstoringen in deze systemen resulteren vaak in tonnen aan Euro\u2019s schade.
